Palmer Hayden
"Midsummer Night in Harlem" - 1936 **APOLOGIES I got the name wrong in the show!!**
About the Artist
Palmer Hayden was an African-American painter who lived primarily in New York during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s-30s. After developing an interest in art at a young age, Hayden spent time working in the circus, then joined the army and was stationed in the Philippines. When he returned to the US, he attended and worked in universities in New York where he continued to practice painting and drawing. His work won an art prize which allowed him to travel to France for several years. Some of his work reflects this period and his experience with Afro-European communities.
Hayden's work centers on African-American (and European) culture, also drawing on folklore (see his John Henry series). During his life and after, critics were divided on his portrayal of African-Americans. Some felt it was too similar to racist, exaggerated depictions which were harmful to the African-American community. Others believed his work was a reclamation of the visual identity of African-Americans. Unlike harmful depictions created by racist white artists, Palmer Hayden's work is a celebration of black arts and culture.

Keith Haring
"Ignorance = Fear" - 1989
About the Artist
Keith Haring was born in 1958 in Pennsylvania where he became interested in cartoons and later he moved to Pittsburgh where he attended Pittsburgh's ivy school of professional art to study commercial art but then he dropped out to focus on his own style and became a maintenance worker at the Pittsburgh Center for the arts where he was able to study the work of other artists and sculptures.
He moved to New York in 1978 and he studied painting at the school of visual arts he also learned about semiotics which is basically the art of signs or symbols and during this period he started to create public works in New York's subways quickly developing a style that was recognizable to the public as uniquely Keith. As he continued these demonstrations his popularity as an artist grew and he began to organize exhibitions at club 57 with his artist friends and collaborated with other artists during the 80s to create public works and a lot of murals he befriended Basquiat and Andy Warhol among many others and a lot of his work during this time was kind of anti-commercialism which is kind of funny seeing how he had studied that for a period of time he incorporated a lot of American icons like Mickey Mouse or McDonald's logo to comment on consumerism. This is a recognizable characteristic of the pop art movement which Keith is associated with.
Over time his style evolved and he became a proud advocate for the anti-crack movement, the anti-apartheid movement, and towards the end of his life, the AIDS awareness and safe sex movements.
Haring’s subject matter changed throughout his life however his style remained relatively the same characterized by bold black lines flat areas of color and simplified forms of humans animals and other popular figures. Most people know him for his dancing people with contorted limbs and lines of shock emanating from their heads. These are the works that inspired my set for today.

Grandma Moses
"Grandma Moses Goes to the Big City" - 1946
About the Artist
Grandma Moses was a highly influential American Folk artist, born in 1860 in Greenwich New York to Margaret and Russell Robertson, the third of 10 children. She grew up on her family’s farm, learning to perform traditional women’s chores like sewing, cooking, and cleaning. She also enjoyed playing outside with her brothers, building rafts and exploring the woods. Grandma Moses’ professional career as an artist only took off in 1938 when she was already 78. She was already a widow and had moved back to New York. A visiting art collector bought some of her paintings for 3-5 dollars and they were exhibited the following year in NY’s museum of modern art. She had another exhibition in 1940 called “what a farm wife painted” in a New York gallery, and continued to grow in popularity for her charming style and unique background. She gained representation and became an American cultural icon, and through the 1940s and 50s, her work was used to sell American holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Mother’s day. She had record-breaking exhibition openings and even received an award for her art from President Truman in 1949.

Gustav Klimt
"The Kiss" - 1907-1908 (71 in x 71 in)
About the Artist
Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was an Austrian painter and a fundamental figure in the Art Nouveau movement (late 19th century). He is well known for using patterns and color in large-scale paintings of human figures. You might know his paintings “The Kiss” or “The Tree of Life."
One of my personal favorites is “The Virgin” which depicts a group of young women posing passionately in a bed of colorful patterned blankets. Here, Klimt captures the idea of a romantic dream, and the uncontrollable urges a young woman might have when sleeping.

Ana Mendieta
Ana Mendieta (1948-1985)
Images from the Silueta series
About the Artist
Ana was a Cuban-American artist best known for her performance art which was concentrated on themes of life versus death, self-image, and femininity.
Her Silueta series is comprised of more than 100 films and photographs, each exploring the connections between, body, spirit, culture, religion, and nature.
One of the most poignant pieces of Silueta is Anima, "Silueta de Cohetes." In this work, Ana collaborated with a firework producer to create a silhouette in fireworks of her body, which she later lit and filmed as it burned out. Notably, the last part of the piece to burn out is the shape of her heart, which points to the idea of the soul outlasting and burning longer than the body.
Ana sadly passed in 1985 when she was tragically thrown from her 33rd-story window in New York City. Her passion and creativity are now preserved in her work, which, like the soul of her silueta, will continue to burn brighter and longer than her material body.
